If the mini-ITX form factor is not small as you wish, and you want something like the Intel NUC, but don’t really like the soldered down processor? Then take a look at the new smallest motherboard from Intel, which measuring at 5.5 inches x 5.8 inches.
This new motherboard form has an Intel’s LGA socket that compatible with Intel Core processors, with SODIMM memory, M.2 drives, PCIe slots as well as an external power supply. And according to Intel, the 5×5 mini form will have two thermal targets, that are 35W and 65W.
The 65W system has a larger heatsink, and support for all Intel Core CPU with the TDP up to 65W, such as Broadwell Core i7-5775C. The Intel Broadwell Core i7-5775C includes 128MB of eDRAM, provides best performances at gaming like play Bioshock Infinite game at 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps (frame per second), or Tomb Raider at 64 fps (low quality), and Dirt Showdown game at 46 fps (medium quality).
About the size, the Intel 5×5 system with the 35W CPU with M.2 drives has around 1.5 inches tall. But if you are using the 65W system with 2.5 inches SATA hard drives, then the system will higher, but still smaller than mini-ITX devices.
I love the Intel NUCs but it has a few limitations that it’s not a good option for all users. The Intel 5×5 mini form could be a good alternative for Intel NUCs and a great solution to build a small computer for your living room for entertainments.
